For the love of horses, in honour of Prospero’s Encore

Orangeville based ‘Horse Wisperer', Jessica Fobert, will get to continue her education in equine therapy because of a generous donation from Tottenham artist, Marilyn Lee Jenkins.
Specifically, proceeds from the sale of Jenkin's 25' x 36' original acrylic on canvas entitled, ‘Prospero's Encore', will be used to ensure that Fobert, can continue her education, learning about the treatment and care of the animals they both love to love.
To go back, Marilyn and Jessica met eight years ago, while taking horsemanship lessons near Elmvale.
The two remained friends, as Jessica continued her education to become a horse trainer/instructor of horsemanship herself. Marilyn, an horse owner, then turned to Jessica for instruction on how to care for her horses, using a “less harsh” approach then they had originally learned.
“I chose to work with horses because I love horses. I wanted to learn an honest approach – one which considers the feelings of the horse first and foremost,” Jessica told the Free Press. “I wanted to learn about the entire horse, and how to teach other horse owners how to care for their animals, mentally, physically and emotionally.”
Taking online courses in equine therapy through Guelph University, Jessica has since opened her own business, Free Rein Horsemanship, just outside of Orangeville.
“I use honest horsemanship practices, with a holistic basis to work with horses to not only get them to do what their owners want them to do, but in a way that works best for the horse,” Jessica said of her practice. “People call me in when they want to change something about how their horse is performing, but over time, that vision changes and we start to work on what's causing the behaviors in the first place.”
Simply put, Jessica is a horse whisperer.
Through clinics, workshops and lessons, Jessica passes along her insight to ensure quality care for every horse.
The education required to keep-up with the information as it becomes available is ongoing, and Jessica jokes that she'll “never be done” with her educational pursuits.
This learning comes at a cost. That's where her friend, and artist, Marilyn comes into the picture. Marilyn, who has donated to worthy causes before, offered ‘Prospero's Encore' for raffle, so that Jessica can continue building her educational portfolio, her business and her reach – to help more animals in need.
The painting features Jessica's horse, Prospero's Encore, a Clydesdale cross, who was originally bound for the European meat market. Jessica paid the “meat price” for him, which cost her about $450.
“He was underweight and noticeably unwell,” she said.
The horse auctions are an easy way for people to get rid of horses that are ill, many of them sold for dog food and glue. Others, like Pospero's Encore, go to Japan, where horse meat is considered a delicacy.
Prospero's Encore was brought back to life, literally, by the love and care shown him by his owner, and through Jessica's training. He's even gone on to star on television, in the pilot episode of ‘Free Rein'.
This ‘Wounded Healer' has since been adopted and has found his forever home.
Marilyn painted from pictures, producing the gallery wrap painting in just over two weeks. The painting is now being auctioned off, and is worth about $3,000, but if you ask Jessica, it's priceless.
“I believe in what Jessica does,” said Marilyn on why she's supporting her friend with such an expensive piece of art, “and the proof is in the pudding.”
Referring to her horse, Pedro, an 11-year old mixed breed, who has been hand raised by Marilyn, using Jessica's natural horsemanship techniques, which makes horses turn out “exactly as they should”.
Raffle tickets for ‘Prospero's Encore' are available through Jenkins and Fobert, through their websites listed below.
A limited number of giclée prints, signed and numbered by the artist, will be made available for purchase following the close of the raffle.

Proving that tradition can be overcome with knowledge, Jessica Fobert hopes to find new ways to “break horses” without breaking their spirits. Support this worthy cause, and buy a raffle ticket.
