CDDHS raises $5000 with ‘Hair Off for Headwaters’

Julie Senese's Grade 12 Business Leadership class at Centre Dufferin District High School (CDDHS) recently hosted ‘Hair Off For Headwaters' – a fundraiser benefitting Headwaters Hospital in Orangeville.
The event was an amazing success, raising $5000 for cancer research, through several students cutting their hair.
Now in its 14th year, Hair Off For Headwaters began at CDDHS when a former teacher was diagnosed with bladder cancer and saw a need for fundraising for the local hospital.
To date, CDDHS students and staff have raised over $135,000 for the Cancer Care Program at Headwaters through this event.
“This is the third year that my Grade 12 Business Leadership class has taken it on as a class project,” Ms. Senese. “The project is treated like a business, in that the class is split into various departments each with their own manager and I act as CEO. The project teaches them a lot about working with others, group dynamics, communication, deadlines and project management.”
Leading up to the main event, Senese's students held a series of smaller fundraisers to raise money and awareness, including ‘Candy for a Cause' – where they sold candy kabobs. Popsicles, trivia games and even just “walking around at lunch with a jug asking for donations” was also part of the class project to raise funds.
The Hair Off event was held last week in the CDDHS gymnasium, where students could watch other students cut off their hair, for a ticket worth $3.
“This was a good source of fundraising money,” confirms Senese. “Local businesses within our community were very generous and donated items to be used as door prizes and prizes for the participants who cut their hair.”
Students taking part in the ‘Hair Off' had to raise a minimum of $100 to participate – and then got their hair cut, shaved or waxed.
“This year our grand prize winner was Eden Galbraith, who raised over $1400,” said Senese.
At the event, Headwaters representatives, Elaine Capes and Nicole Hand, were on hand to receive the cheque presented.
Hair dressers from Enchanting Esthetics volunteered their time to cut hair.
The following students participated by cutting their hair:
Brent Crane
Raegan Noseworthy
Heather Hollywood
Quinn deLaat
Diva Elgie
Stephanie Kaehli
Emily Docherty (on behalf of Mr. Leggett who waxed his leg)
Eden Galbraith
Austin Tremble
Eric Hill
Congratulations to Ms. Senese's Grade 12 class for an event well run, and to the brave students and staff that took part in this important fundraising initiative.
