New to the event this year, the race is sure to be a big draw for the crowds and so the Town is hoping for an enthusiastic entry response. The bed races will take to the streets in a variety of shapes and themes created by participants. Shawnette Crouse Events Coordinator for the Town of Shelburne encourages everyone, “To challenge a friend or business and come out for a lot of fun.” Participants in the race may be between 11 and 70 years of age and race in teams of five or six. Only one member of each team is allowed to be on the bed at any given time and only four people are allowed to propel the bed forward at any one time, however a substitute runner will be allowed. There must be no mechanical power behind the propulsion or braking – “human energy only.” Beds may be pushed, but never pulled and all team members must wear protective head gear in order to participate. Other safety apparel such as knee and elbow pads are encouraged to prevent injury in the case of a fall. Rules put out by the Town specify that the frame of the bed, which can be between 6-7 feet long and 3-4 feet wide, does not need to be an original bed, but it must have four wheels, fixed or swivel and of uniform or varied sized, which keep contact to the ground throughout the race. Steering mechanisms and handles are allowed, but handles must not exceed 16 inches. Although a mattress is not required, there must be a covering to keep the rider secure and those pushing the bed must be able to see the road ahead clearly as safety is a top priority for organizers. There are a variety awards to be given to the racing teams with a trophy to be given to the overall fastest team.” Additional awards will also be given for Best Bed Design, Most Outrageous Bed, the “What were you thinking award?” and a People's Choice Award. This year's Heritage Day Street Festival theme is “Back to the Old Jelly Days” with a western atmosphere. The event takes place Saturday, June 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. All beds must have the team name clearly displayed, so it is a great opportunity to promote a business or organization while supporting the community and joining in the fun of Heritage Day. The cost to participate is $50 per team. For registration forms and payment, go to Shelburne Town Hall, located at 203 Main Street East, or e-mail: scrouse@shelburne.ca for more information.
