Shelburne Home Hardware celebrates the start of something new

It took two and a half years, but Bill Gillam, owner of Shelburne Home Hardware Building Centre (SHHBC), can finally call the place his own.
After purchasing the hardware store from Murray Fines in December, 2012, Gillam with the support of his team of staff began a massive undertaking – to renovate the entire store, inside and out.
Starting with the exterior, Gillam spent four months, between October 2013 and January 2014, improving his yard, truck decaling, highway signs, arena billboards, Kitchen Centre signage and all the additional outbuildings – incorporating current corporate branding standards.
The Past 16 weeks from February to today, Gillam and added countless hours with his staff knee deep in moving shelves, scraping floors, taking down walls and drywall, working in between caution tape side by side to really get the job done. We all have a tremendous feeling of satisfaction from accomplishing our goal. The interior of the store looks amazing.
“With a vision from Brian Hollingshead and John Vanderwel of Home Hardware's Store Planning, and the complete support of my staff and wife Carole, I was able to achieve what we set out to do – make our beautiful store even more perfect for our loyal Shelburne customers,” Gillam told the Free Press.
“I want to thank all of my staff members for their support and effort during this transition,” said Gillam. “And, of course, our wonderful customers for bearing with us through the process.”
Inside, SHHBC has undergone a metamorphosis – although it always was a great place to shop, with unique and “handy” products, people and services – into a big city shopping experience, right here in the heart of our rural town.
Modernizing, the hardware store now has: new check-out desks, mixed laminate and tile flooring, new open concept (with the removal of a 25' wall), new paint department, new housewares department, new product displays, racking and end displays. The store has also been re-merchandised to make your shopping experience easier, and more convenient. And since looks matter, new signs, featuring modern graphics and images now help guide your shopping experience. Finally, a fresh coat of paint has warmed up the walls (painted in ‘Candle Stick' – a Beautitone colour, available in store).
Gillam with the support of his knowledgeable staff has also introduced new products in-store, including the Kuraidori line of kitchen knives, Simon Chang's exclusive paint colour collection (with interactive multi-media displays), and a new Home Expressions & Giftware section.
And finally, the sign out front no longer says ‘Fines Home Hardware & Building Centre'. It now reads, ‘Shelburne Home Hardware Building Centre' – the end of an era and the start of something new.
To mark this momentous occasion, Home Hardware President and CEO, Terry Davis and Dave Tucker, Area Manager, attended the celebration at Shelburne Home Hardware Building Centre on Wednesday morning. Shelburne Mayor, Ken Bennington, and Town of Shelburne CEO, John Telfer, were also present, as were Gillam's wife, Carole, vendors and several of his friends. Customers and employees also took time to celebrate with Bill and Carole with a delicious cake from the Shelburne's IGA and refreshments. Gillam's events always include a BBQ for local charities and this one was in support of the Dufferin County Special Olympics. The local coordinator “Geoff Dunlop” had 7 Special Olympians handing out Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and Drinks for a donation. They will also be having the BBQ on Saturday and Sunday as well, so bring your appetite and a friend, because smiles are free also. All In-store specials run until Sunday.
And what's a celebration without awards!
Gillam recognized several employees with Service Awards for reaching milestones achievements within their Home Hardware careers:
5–Year Award recipients:
• Bonnie Emmons
• Audra Godfrey
• James Gordon
• Jacob Nicolson
10–Year Award recipients:
• Clarence Pinkney
• Sandy Harron
15–Year Award recipient:
• Alf Ellis
25–Year Award recipients:
• Wayne Nicolson
• Glen Allen
Next, Gillam asked Jennette Billings to step forward, while he presented the ‘Rose Beyond the Wall' award. This award, in honour of the late Shelburne Home Hardware employee, Ken Billings, is presented to an individual employee who exemplifies qualities of strength, pride, courage, growth, leadership. Faith , hope & love of their job with the respect for others. The 2015 award winner was Allen Purdy. Purdy was chosen because he stands for all that Ken Billings stood for. Gillam said that I can give every employee an award for all the work that they have done for our store in many areas that each and every one was asked to step up. This past year Allen stood out just like a Rose. Bill introduced Ken Billings wife Janette, who did the presentation to Allen. “Janette is part of our family now, and is welcome each and every day” Gillam told Janette after an emotional presentation.

The ‘Rose Beyond the Wall Award' began in 2014, and the first recipient was James Gordon.
Gillam then explained a new CHL jersey hanging just inside the front entrance, which was presented to Bill from Don Cherry as a gift. Gillam felt that because Home Hardware is a sponsor of the CHL that it was only fitting to have the Jersey framed and on display in his store. “Don Cherry wasn't able to be here today, but shops in the store and loves talking to all the staff. The Jersey is a gift for me but I think we can all enjoy it, it's not every day you have Grapes as a customer, He's a real Beauty!” Gillam said.
The final award went to Sandy Harron for her painting, entitled ‘Brier Light House'. Harron the store manager and local artist created the painting as part of a Home Hardware Stores Nation Wide Campaign for Beautitone to have employees of Home Hardware paint what they feel represents Canada as part Home Hardwares 50 year Celebration in 2014. Harron painting was on Auction at the 100th Market in April 2014 and Gillam was bidding on the painting, but lost out on the bidding. Gillam said the painting had been sold to a buyer in Nova Scotia, but negotiated with the Home Dealer, and brought it back to Shelburne where it belonged. The painting will now hang in the store on permanent display for all the customers and staff to admire, Sandy was deeply touched by the event when Bill unveiled the painting. “Sandy is an incredible person and does some amazing work, I will be working on promoting her for future Home Hardware Store Events, she has a huge message for you to hear”
The Shelburne location is one of 1060 Home Hardware stores Canada-wide. Home Hardware generates $5.6 billion in sales annually, and each location is owned by an independent, community-minded operator.
Congratulations to Bill and Carole Gillam on the successful completion this major renovation.
We can now officially welcome you to the Shelburne business community, two and a half years later, and for many years to come going forward!
