Ready, set, go!

Are you ready for the 1st annual bed races at this weekends Heritage Day?
Did you know that the first document bed races were held in the North Yorkshire Town of Knarsborough England. The first race in 1965 was only open to Army, Navy and American Marines, but now the competition is open to anyone.
The competitors race in teams of six, plus one on the bed. Each team provides their own bed, decorated in the theme for the year. The bed runs on four wheels, but also need to be able to float. The 3km run race begins and ends at Conyngham Hall. About halfway through the run, the teams face the one-in-five gradient climb to Castle Top before it's back down the hill and toward the final challenge – crossing a river.
Wow that's a lot of work! The Shelburne race is not quite a gruelling as the one held annually in Knarsborough, however is should prove to be just as entertaining.
At last count there were 12 beds entered in the Shelburne race, and pictured here is our Mayor Ken Bennington with his bed racer appropriately name “Cheese Whizz”, after his lifetime friend, Chris Cottinghame, who helped him build it. Shelburne's race teams must consist of four members plus a Captain.
Make sure to not miss a single moment of what should prove to be a day to remember at the 1st Annual Bed Races this Saturday. Beds will be on display starting at 10 a.m. with the first race beginning at 1:30 p.m. Final bed races will be held at 3 p.m. with awards being handed out immediately following.
You still have time to enter if you want, and to do so simply go to the Town of Shelburne website www.townofshelbnurne.on.ca and for a registration fee of $50 you too, can race a bed down the streets of Shelburne. If you are short a racer Mayor Bennington has told the Free Press he is willing to lend one of his racers to any team that would like to enter!
