Chasing Hunger in Orangeville and Shelburne There are over 150 families in Orangeville and Shelburne that depend on food banks each month. Many families are just one crisis away from hunger: a crisis like a lost job, a death, or a break-up. On Saturday, June 13th, the Compass 5K4Food helped raise hunger awareness in our region through the collection of money and food donations for the Orangeville and Shelburne Food Banks. The Compass 5K4Food took place at Compass Community Church (Hockley Rd. & Hwy. 10, just north of Orangeville) and began at 10 a.m. There was also a fun run, in which kids 13 years old and younger could participate. Following the races there was a barbecue lunch (with all proceeds going to our food banks), live music by Orangeville's Soul Collective, and activities for kids. As an added incentive, the first 100 people to bring a food donation received a coupon for a free snack-size smoothie compliments of Orangeville's Booster Juice. “The community support for this race has been overwhelming!” said Bri Bull, Regional Outreach Director of Compass Community Church. “Many local sponsors partnered with us. They funded the race costs so that all registration fees could go straight to the food banks.” “Last year's race was a big success,” continues Bri. “We were able to offer $10,000 to the Orangeville Food Bank, and these funds went toward providing healthy, fresh foods for children.” Since Compass Community Church has recently launched a second location in Shelburne, the 5K4Food goals now include support for our community as well. This year the Compass 5K4Food sought to raise $5,000 for the food bank in Shelburne in addition to $10,000 for the food bank in Orangeville.
