After taking a 3–1 lead in the first period the Vets ran into trouble in the second when Fergus fought back and tied the game then went ahead to end the second period with a two goal lead. First period Vets goals came from Doug Derbyshire, Zack LaForm, and Jake Newton. The trouble for the Vets came mid way through the second frame. After scoring two more goal in the second, the Vets hit a wall allowing Fergus to score four and go head by a goal. A late Shelburne goal from Nathan Marshall tied the game at six, but the Thistles scored two more late in the frame to again take the lead. The first two second period Shelburne goals came from Matt Allen and Jake Newton. The game was tied early in the final period on goals from Derbyshire and Newton but with 19 minutes to go, it was far from over. The Thistles responded with two of their own followed by a Shelburne goal from LaForm. With just over half the period remaining, Ty McCallum got a pair of goals less than a minute apart to make it a 11–11 game and set up the remaining time for battle to take the game. Fergus broke the tie with 41 seconds remaining and managed to hang on for the rest of the game to take the win. The final was 12–11. “We had a good game but we slacked off in the second period,” said Vets' Nick Fines. “We came out hard in the first period and got a couple of quick goals. After the second period, the coach said to come out stronger - that we were still in it. He said ‘pressure, pressure, pressure' - to try to get them to give up the ball and make mistakes” The Vets almost did it, but had to settle for the one goal loss. The Shelburne squad finished the regular season with a 7–8–1 record – good for 15 points and a fifth place standing in the West Division of the OJCLL. With the regular season over, the Vets got right into the playoffs with their quarterfinal series against Oakville on Sunday, July 5, in Shelburne. The Vets had a tough first period in the first game of the series when they gave up five goals and only managed to score a single leaving the pressure on them to get back in the game. The second period didn't turn out much better when the Oakville squad outscored them 7–2 to go into the third period with a nine goal lead. The Vets managed to make their mark in the third with two final goals but that's all they could do for the night and they had to settle for a 13–5 loss in the first game of the series.
