It was a much needed win for the Cubs who were having a good season before suddenly taking the consecutive losses and dropping in the standings. While the Cubs had some good batting in Wednesday night's game, it was their defensive work that won them the game when they shut-out the Astros with some superb play making and pretty spectacular catching in the field. The Cubs got on the scoreboard early with a home run by Tyler Linger in the second inning and were leading 3–0 in the fifth. Rob Kinsley had a base hit in the fifth inning then made it second on a steal, and then to third, but the side retired before he could score. The catch of the night came in the sixth inning when left fielder Luke Newmaster made a spectacular diving save at the fence and stood up holding the ball high to show he still had it. The Astros had one more chance to get in the game when they went to bat in the seventh inning. After getting a man on base on a hit to shallow left field, the game ended on the next play with a throw to second base for the out. “Defence – everyone helped out and chipped in when they could,” said Cubs pitcher Tyler Linger. “Luke made two great catches out there in left and then Coe (Adam) had an amazing game at short. He had six or seven balls hit to him and he ate them all up.” With a low scoring game, it usually means both sides had good defensive posturing. “I think we could have hit a bit better, but we had them one out and loaded bases, but they came out with a good play at the plate – a double play to shut us down. I thought we were going to chalk up a few, but you get what you can and try to limit them to what they can,” Linger said. The win moved the Cubs up a notch in the standings to ninth place. The New Lowell Knights are currently in first place in the North Dufferin Baseball League followed by the Aurora Jays in second place and the Ivy Leafs in third. The Cubs will play two road games this weekend in Ivy and Creemore. They return to their home diamond in Mansfield on Wednesday, July 15, to host the New Lowell Knights.
