Lead organizers Greg and Heather Holmes are planning for approximately 200 trailers, but say “as we don't do pre-registrations – until it happens, we don't know!” Greg and Heather, who own and operate Holmes' Appliance and Music Store in Shelburne, say “Weather has a little bit to do with it, some will not come out if its calling for a wet weekend, but we have two large tents, supplied by the Shelburne Lions Club, and the music will go on – rain or shine! We also anticipate more walk-in traffic, as many will come for the day or evening just to enjoy the music and festivities.” The couple say they look forward to all of it. “It is so much fun, getting together with old friends and to make new friends each year.” However, the pair acknowledge that the event is a lot of work to prepare for, “but it is such a good feeling to see everything fall into place and to have another successful year.” Everyone at the event is excited to have the popular barbershop quartet U4ia performing at the Sunday morning Gospel Hour. This wonderfully entertaining group is worth the admission price, especially as it will be the last time they will be singing together. Reports are the harmonious acapella quartet, which has performed together across Ontario for many years, is losing a member to the province of British Columbia. Pickin' in the Park is an annual event, supported by the Shelburne Lions Club, the Town of Shelburne, the Shelburne Kinettes, and Holmes Appliances and Music Store. It is just one of many big events that Heather and Greg Holmes assist with throughout the year in Shelburne. “We are very fortunate to have the support from many friends, and some campers tell us to make sure we add them onto the volunteer list for the next year.” The event needs many volunteers to make it successful: at the main entrance; registering the campers; or assisting with the day-only visitors. The Town of Shelburne, Shawnette Crouse, and the Public Works Dept. help out with preparations and the park grounds and the Lions Club donate the use of their large tents, which the Holmes help to put up early in the week. Then there is the Shelburne Kinettes, who volunteer their time at the Kinette Food Booth – open all weekend: Friday 6:30 –10 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. until noon. Prizes are donated by local businesses and individuals for the raffle table as well as ‘give-a-ways' throughout the weekend. It is a real community event. Anyone who would like to volunteer for Pickin in the Park may call Greg and Heather Holmes at 519 925-3037 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Pickin' in the Park has a great variety of musical entertainment, and the organizers are “very appreciative” of every musician that entertains throughout the event. “Without them, there would be no music!” says Heather. “We do not hire musicians or bands – it is all done voluntarily.” Musicians are welcome to bring their instrument and sign up to perform two numbers on stage Friday evening, Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening. For those who like something more casual, there is jamming in the park during the weekend that any musician can join. All profits from Pickin' in the Park go toward building a permanent structure in Fiddle Park. Local service clubs have shown interest in helping in this endeavour, which would see the creation of a great asset for the Town where other festivals and events could be held.
