Becketts return for 65th Annual Fiddle Championship

The 65th Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship will host the Beckett's again this year as they return by popular demand.
The August 5–9th event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Shelburne, and features Canada's top fiddlers in competition and first rate performers, like the Beckett family, as part of the traditional entertainment around the excitement of the competition.
Organizers say, “The Beckett Family is sure to get your toes tappin' with their arrangements of traditional country music and old tyme fiddling.” The group returned to Fiddlefest for the first time in nearly a decade last year and John Beckett said it was “a pleasure to come down; it brings back a lot of great memories – we saw a lot of people we hadn't seen in a long time.” Certainly, the Shelburne audience was thrilled to see them return.
The Becketts, who have incorporated three and even four generations of the family into the show, have opened for acts like the Barra McNeil's, Natalie Mc Master and Ashley McIssac. Stars of the show, Linsey and Tyler Beckett, are both past fiddle contest winners, and Linsey is an award winning step dancer. The siblings are also two time Canadian duet fiddle champions and three time Ontario duet champions.
Since graduating with a business degree, Tyler has played with Jason McCoy, Jason Blaine and Tara Oram, and with the award winning bluegrass band, The Chapman's. Linsey toured with The Don Messer Jubilee Tribute Show starting at the age of 13 and began working with the stage production Bowfire in 2009. Bowfire is comprised of some of North America's finest fiddlers, touring across the United States, Mexico, Germany and Canada.
Rotary describes the Beckett's show as capturing “the corners of traditional music from Western Swing to Bluegrass,” including “exhilarating step dancing, down home humour, ole tyme fiddling and special guests.” The Beckett Family also have three recordings available for purchase: “Fiddlin' 4 Generations,” which included great grandpa, Elmer Beckett, “Changing Times”, and their latest, “The Roots of Our Raising.”
It is important to note that the proceeds of the Fiddle Championship support Shelburne Rotary's many charitable projects, including: “development of, and major financial contribution to, a new BMX riding area in Greenwood Park; renovation and expansion of the Centre Dufferin Recreation Centre (Shelburne Arena); Headwaters Health Care Centre (Orangeville Hospital); re-development of the Shelburne Library; Girl Guides and Boy Scouts; minor sports, such as: hockey, baseball, figure skating, lacrosse, soccer; Shepherd's Cupboard food bank and many more.” The Rotary Club of Shelburne presents Linsey and Tyler Beckett on Thursday, August 6 at 7:30 p.m.
