On July 30, David Tilson MP announced at Shelburne Town Hall that the Town of Shelburne will be receiving $780,160 from the Small Communities Fund and $118,000 from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.
Tilson made the announcement with regard to the Small Communities Fund which is for the Town of Shelburne Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade project which will see a number of upgrades to the plant including improvements to the filtration system, power generator and the building’s roof and walls. These upgrades will help improve the building’s structure and extend the functional lifespan of the plant while helping to restore water quality in the Boyne River.
Tilson stated “Our Government recognizes the unique infrastructure needs of Canada’s smaller communities and created a $1-billion Small Communities Fund as part of the New Building Canada Plan, to ensure that small communities receive the funding opportunities they need and here in Ontario, $272 million in federal funding is dedicated for communities with fewer than 100,000 residents”.
Tilson went on to say that “in 2014, the New Building Canada Plan, which makes over $53 billion available for provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure between 2014 – 2024.
It is the largest and longest federal infrastructure commitment in Canadian history, providing stable funding for a 10-year period. That’s ten years of modern and improved public infrastructure that will benefit families across the province. For Ontario, this represents almost $11 billion in dedicated federal funding, including more than $2.7 billion under the New Building Canada Fund and an estimated $8.12 billion under the federal Gas Tax Fund.
As the largest component of the New Building Canada Plan, the federal Gas Tax Fund is supporting economic growth and job creation from coast to coast to coast. Last year alone $2-billion was made available to municipalities, supporting approximately 2,000 new projects across Canada. We are focused on creating the right conditions for economic growth and long-term prosperity. Projects worth more than an estimated $6 billion in total project costs for funding across the country have been identified to date though the New Building Canada Fund.
Moving forward, our Government will continue to invest in infrastructure initiatives that play an important role in developing our communities, creating jobs and strengthening our economy.
For that reason, we created a new program to support the renovation, expansion and rehabilitation of existing community infrastructure as part of the Canada 150 celebrations. On May 15, the Prime Minister announced the details of this new program – the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program – which will invest $150 million in community infrastructure across the country”.
Thanks to the Town of Shelburne ,who applied for the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure, the town will see up to $118,000 for projects that will persevere community spaces across Southern Ontario. This program will go towards renovations on the pavilion located across from the Centre Dufferin District High School.
Tilson advised that “this is one of the many infrastructure-related initiatives that the Harper government has undertaken to generate well-being and builds on FedDev Ontario’s delivery of the Community Infrastructure Improvement fund and the Recreations Infrastructure Canada Program in Ontario, which represented a federal investment of more then $225 million and supported more than 1180 projects.
He finished by saying “It is thanks to projects like this that Ontario’s communities remain among the best places in the world to live, work and raise a family today and into the future”.
