Shelburne Giant Tiger helping less fortunate students

It may be the hap-hapiest time of the year, but buying school supplies can be expensive – especially if you have more than one student in your household.
If you choose to take your student back-to-school shopping at Shelburne Giant Tiger, your Canadian discount retailer, you can certainly keep costs down, but what if you can't afford to go shopping at all?
Andrew and Diane Lewis, owners of Shelburne Giant Tiger understand it can be tough, and are asking you to contribute to the ‘Charity Backpack Program'.
The fundraiser, now in its third year, benefits local families by providing new backpacks, filled to the zipper, with everything a student needs to be successful.
Last year, GT turned over eight filled bags to the local school board support worker, who then identified students who could use a helping hand – in confidence.
This year, 12 backpacks await filling, and the increase reflects the growing need in the community.
“We are looking for donations of any kind – pens, paper, calculators, binders, anything,” said Mr. Lewis. “We're donating the backpacks, and asking the community to buy and extra item or two, and at checkout we'll set aside your contributed items and make sure they get to students who need them.”
The ‘Charity Backpack Program', began Aug. 14th, and has been off to a slow start, but the Lewis' have faith that the community will come through. And if the bags aren't completely full by the first day of school, they'll top them up themselves, at their own expense.
The ‘Charity Backpack Program' runs until Friday, Sept. 4th.
Please consider donating, and remember, giving a student the right tools for learning could make all the difference in the outcome of his or her life.
