2014 crime severity index released

Statistics Canada recently released the 2014 Crime Severity index (CSI) for police services in Canada. The index is weighed based on police reported statistics regarding criminal incidents. The severity of the crime is a contributing factor which Stats Canada uses to determine a “Severity index”.
The Shelburne Police Service had a CSI of 36.59 compared to 27.57 in 2013. Chief Moore attributed the increase to the attempt murder charge in July of 2014. Each type of offence is assigned a seriousness “weight”. The weights are derived from actual sentences handed down by courts in all provinces and territories. More serious crimes are assigned higher weights, less serious offences lower weights. “In a community our size a serious crime of this nature can skew the numbers”, Chief Moore advised. Even with the increase in Crime Severity Index Shelburne was the 10th lowest of all police services in Ontario.
The Town of Shelburne’s Violent CSI is reported at 52.15 compared to 34.44 in 2013 and Non-Violent at 30.85 compared to 25.01 in 2013.
In 2014, Shelburne Police reported a weighted “clearance rate” of 66.01% with the Provincial average being 42.57%. This clearance rate was the fourth highest in the Province for all police services only behind Wingham, Gananoque and Brockville. Chief Moore stated “clearance rates are very important and is one way to measure police effectiveness”.
