With 14 games still left on the regular season schedule the first two games hardly set the tone for the season – especially since the Vets were barely squeezed out in both games. The season opener at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex against the Innisfil Saints ended with a 9–9 tie in overtime. After playing to an 8–8 tie in the third period, the squads returned for a regulation overtime period and scored one each to end the game. There was no winner but it gave the Vets their first point of the season. Shelburne goals came from Tyler Greer, Mark Hall, Doug Derbyshire, Darren Mick, Brett Snell, Quinn Fraser for two, and a pair from Tyler Shepherd. The Shelburne squad travelled to Caledon for game two to take on the Bandits at Mayfield arena on Tuesday, May 14. Neither squad could do much in the first period other than a single goal from Caledon and the teams returned for the second frame to see who could get the edge. The Vets managed to take command of the early part of the second period scoring three from Connor Early, Mark Hall, and Jeff Brett by the five minute mark. But the Bandits responded notching three of their own before the clock ran out to make it a 4–3 game going into the final twenty minutes. “It was a defensive game, that was pretty obvious,” said coach Mark Early. “We took some bad penalties in the middle frame and they cashed in on that.” The Bandits had a two-goal lead after scoring goal number five at 1:35 into the third period. Shelburne's Brett Snell scored late in the period to bring the Vets close enough that they could try to tie it up, but another Caledon goal late in the game gave the Bandit's some insurance and they held off the Shelburne team for the remaining five an a-half minutes to take a 6-4 win. “You've got some games were the teams are tight defensively,” Early said. “We have to get our offence clicking. Last week, (in game one) our boys played pretty well, but we let them off the hook when they tied it up.” Vets coaching staff said the final 2013 roster still hasn't been decided. “We're not finalized yet,” Early said. “I've told the guys they still have to earn their spot.” The squad posted an 18 man roster for the Tuesday game. The Vets will return home to the CDRC to host the Wilmot Wild on Friday, May 24.
