Driver crashes while taking pictures


On August 24, at 6:03 p.m. OPP were dispatched to a personal injury collision on Mono Amaranth Townline at 20th Sideroad in Amaranth. Upon arrival police discovered a second collision had occurred after initial collision. The second collision occurred when a vehicle had stopped to render assistance and a distracted driver taking pictures on his cellphone rear ended the stopped vehicle. The distracted driver verbally identified himself with a false name. He further claimed to be from out of province. When interviewed by police he admitted rear-ending the vehicle while taking picture on his cellphone. Further police follow-up with registered owner of vehicle revealed that male had given false name. A police computer check revealed he was a suspended driver. The investigating officer also learned that the vehicle was taken without the owner's consent. As result of detailed and thorough investigation by the OPP, 29 year old Sean Upshall of Toronto, was charged with take automobile without owners consent and obstructing a peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He was further charged with Highway Traffic Act offences of suspended driving and distracted driving Motorists are reminded that police are able to check photographs on driver's licenses via the OPP Mobile Work Stations in vehicle. Drivers are encouraged to be honest to avoid criminal charges. Drivers are also required by Ontario law to identify themselves with valid driver's license by request of police officers.
