News! News!
Big excitement here at our library! We invite you to come and check our new reading corner. Comfy chairs in front of the fireplace and a small attached table to hold your laptop, your books or magazines and your cup of coffee. Yes, coffee! We have set up an individual cup coffeemaker for our patrons to use. We just ask that you keep it within the sitting area and make a donation to defray the costs… We hope that with the fall and winter approaching you will find this a warm and welcoming space. We also have all our study carrels that once held the children’s computers outfitted with a power source so you can work on your own laptop and connect to our Wi-Fi. And there is more to come… next week we will have even more fantastic News to share with you.
Market Days
I have been enjoying talking to many of you at our stand at the Shelburne BIA Farmers Market. As well, we have met many new folks and were able to tell them about the library and of course, there are many folks passing through who support the market. This Thursday, October 8 is the last day of the current season and I urge you to come out and look at all the wonderful fall vegetable and other products displayed and available from our local farmers and producers. Weather permitting g, I will be there with a great selection of books… our best ever till our Book sale and Silent auction on November 28th. See you tomorrow!

Teen Scene
Last week some of our members continued working on their spooky Halloween books that were started at Pizza and Pages’ September meeting, while others tried their hands at making fall-inspired button art. This week (Thursday, October 8th) we will be making fall-scented homemade candles. Teens need not bring anything other than a safety-first mindset!
Additionally, teens are encouraged to continue reading spooky/Halloween/horror books for October’s book club meeting, which takes place Thursday, Oct 29th, from 6–7 p.m. The discussion will focus on the characters within these spooky selections, so come prepared to discuss how they act, speak, and relate to other characters!
Oct 7th – DIY Candles
Oct 15th – Leaf & Jar art
Oct 22nd – Life-sized Curses game
Oct 29th – Spooky selections book club meeting
New Books
This week I finished reading J.A. Jance’s book, Dance of the Bones. This book features her popular retired detective J.P. Beaumont. What I found distracting in this book, was that each chapter began with a short paragraph, in italics of a Native American story which runs from chapter to chapter. The remainder of the chapter contained the ongoing main story which of course also continued chapter to chapter. So, following two quite distinct stories is sometimes challenging. However, I surely don’t read this genre to be challenged. The plot line is intriguing and focuses on a cold case of murder that takes all of Beau’s and Brandon Walker’s well-honed detective skills to solve and they do!
The second book I have read this week is The End of Absence by Michael Harris. Now this is indeed a thought-provoking book exploring our lives lived in the current environment of constant connection. You know, the thumbs typing madly at the dinner table, the admonition at the theatre to please turn off your cellphones etc. He has researched the topic widely and uses relevant statistics to punctuate his arguments. This is a well written, thoughtful book. What is an additional bonus is that it is also very readable often using wit and very elegant prose to make a point.
