The delegation, presented by Maille Martin received high praise from the Mayor for taking the initiative and committing to the research needed to address the viability of the project. “It's a good news story,” said the Mayor, “I appreciate that you are willing to take on the idea rather than just pointing fingers.” New Councillor Dan Sample, who ran on a platform of bringing more community events and activities to Shelburne, supported the group. He told Council, “Tonight is about the formation of a Committee to put a plan and ideas forward and get assistance and advice from the Town.” Councillor Randy Chamber complimented the group on their efforts, but had concerns that without approval from the Town, planning fundraisers at this point might be “putting the horse before the cart.” Treasurer Carol Sweeney also voiced concerns about the high costs of health inspections and experts, which will be required to maintain the safety of a splash pad. She encouraged the group to include those costs in their budget estimates. Councillor Walter Benotto said the CDRC had a certified inspector for the pool as a reference for the group. Councillor Chambers also asked where the group would be getting support – Maille Martin said they would seek funding from “within the community and local businesses.” Mayor Ken Bennington pointed out that Shelburne had a history of success with such projects, quoting the CDRC as an example. He told the group he would like Council to appoint a Councillor to the Splash Pad Committee to keep the Town informed and communication open. Maille Martin, a mother of two young children who has lived in Shelburne for six years, told the Free Press the Splash Pad Committee would be operating on a five year plan. Martin has a background in “not for profit funding” and feels having a precedent for a large fund raising project would be good for the Town” as it would make it easier for other groups to follow in the future. Maille Martin said the first year would be focused on making it a “town aware' project, including talking to schools to get fundraising initiatives underway and organizing a large event, hopefully next summer. They are looking to follow up with small, consistent annual fundraisers. She said they were very happy people attended the meeting to support the initiative,“With new people moving into town, it is important to get them involved,” said Martin. “Our short term goals were met tonight and now we have a fully formed committee with our task ahead of us.” By Marni Walsh --------------------------------------------------- Images: --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Post date: 2015-10-15 22:31:57 Post date GMT: 2015-10-16 02:31:57 Post modified date: 2015-10-22 22:03:38 Post modified date GMT: 2015-10-23 02:03:38 ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Export of Post and Page as text file has been powered by [ Universal Post Manager ] plugin from www.gconverters.com
