Royals take loss in final game

The Centre Dufferin District High School Royals baseball team ended regular season play with a final game against John F. Ross Collegiate at Princess of Wales Park in Orangeville.
The Monday (Oct. 5) game got underway at 3:30 p.m. with cloudy skies but a decent temperatures for a ball game.
Ross got an early start bringing in three runs in the early going. They made it a 4–1 game in the third inning when an error at first base brought enough time for another run.
Nick Bannon led off the third inning for the Royals with a nice drive right over second base but the squad couldn't capitalize and retired the side with two more outs.
Royal's pitcher Ty Doney made that catch of the day when a Ross player hit a line-drive right at the mound in the top of the fourth. Doney snagged the ball for the out.
Ross managed two more runs in the fourth when a player hit a double then a follow up hit that brought men in from second and third base.
The fifth inning had no hits for either team as good defensive posturing turned in a short inning.
The Royals made some nice plays late in the game including a nice grab at third base by Keith Gordaneir who made the throw to first for the out.
Ty Doney hit to the centre field fence in the bottom of the seventh for a well deserved triple.
He was driven in on the next at-bat when Jake Currie connected and made the sacrifice hit when he was thrown out at first.
The game ended with a throw to second to pick off the runner and an 8–2 win for Ross.
“They hit really well. We missed a couple of plays. We were playing pretty well,” Said Royals catcher Dan Johnston. “There was a few holes, (on defence) we missed a couple but we still made some good plays. A couple of more runs would have been nice.”
The Royals have a talented team this year and are banking on the next couple of seasons to really turn out a competitive performance. With several younger grade nine and ten players on the squad who also play competitive rep ball during the summer, the Royals should have a solid squad for the next season.
