Students predict a Liberal majority

More than 850,000 Canadian students participated in Student Vote 2015 last week, casting ballots in their schools to coincide with the federal election.
Much like the results of the federal election, student voters elected a Liberal majority government with the Conservatives forming the official opposition.
In the Student Vote, the Liberals took 223 seats, the Conservatives won 69, and the NDP once again forms the third party with 40 seats. The Green Party won four seats, and the Bloc Quebecois finished with one.
The number of students who participated in this year's Student Vote was nearly double the amount from the 2011 federal election. Over 6,000 schools from across the country participated.
“It is astounding that more than 850,000 young Canadians took part in this year's Student Vote from nearly every riding in the country,” said Taylor Gunn, President and CEO of CIVIX Canada, the non-partisan charity that organized the vote.
“These numbers are a reflection of the incredible effort put forth by Canadian educators to ensure that, by using Student Vote in their classrooms, they are building their students into citizens,” said Gunn.
Forty-seven schools in the Upper Grand District School Board registered to hold their own student vote, and students showed up excited and engaged.
In Guelph, students under the voting age elected Liberal Lloyd Longfield with more than 33 per cent of the vote (in Monday's federal election Longfield won the seat with 49 per cent of the vote).
In Wellington-Halton Hills, students elected Conservative incumbent Michael Chong, with 50.73 per cent of the vote. In the federal election, Chong's results were nearly identical – he returns to the House of Commons with 50.8 per cent of the vote.
Students in the Perth-Wellington riding elected Liberal Stephen McCotter with over 37 per cent of the vote. In the federal results, Conservative John Nater took the riding with 43 per cent of the vote. McCotter finished second with 37.5 per cent of the vote.
In the riding of Dufferin-Caledon, students elected Liberal Ed Crewson with nearly 40 per cent of the vote. In the federal results, Conservative David Allan Tilson took the seat with 46 per cent.
