Fire fighters visit Hyland Heights

On Thursday, October 15th, the Shelburne Fire Department visited the three Kindergarten classes at Hyland Heights Elementary School. Firefighters Matt, Tony and Ian brought the aerial truck and explained the different equipment that firefighters get to use, including the jaws of life. Students asked lots of great questions, such as “How do you get the water to come out of the hose?” and “Why do you wear that mask on your face?” When the tables were turned and the firefighters asked questions, the students were able to tell many safety rules they had learned in class, such as to Stop Drop and Roll if your clothes are on fire, or to call 911 to get help. A couple of students even guessed the correct length of the aerial ladder--100 feet. Two highlights of the morning were the students getting to sit in the firefighters seats and check out the inside of the fire truck, and watching their Science teacher, Mrs. Rogers, don the fire fighter's gear. The Kindergarten students want to say thanks to Matt, Tony and Ian for taking their time and bringing the firetruck (and themselves) to Hyland Heights.
