Trudeau and Food & Water First

About a year ago Liberal leader Justin Trudeau met Food & Water First's Shirley Boxem at an event in Dufferin County. Earlier that day, he attended the annual International Ploughing Match and stopped by the Food & Water First booth. That evening, when he was introduced to Shirley, he said “I saw your group at the Ploughing Match! Great work.” While our campaign is not a national one – we're focused on preserving Ontario's Class 1 farmland and water resources – we hope the new Prime Minister Trudeau and his government will address the issue of farmland preservation and food security. These are critical issues for Canada as climate change takes its toll on soil and water, and our population grows. There are positive signs of change. During the campaign, three Liberal candidates in the Pickering region vowed that should the Liberals form government, a new airport would not be built on the 8,000-acres of Class 1 soil known as the Federal Lands. They won their seats and we will hold their government to its campaign promise. Congratulations to our Partners Land Over Landings for their persistent and positive efforts to preserve the Federal Lands for food production. To our new Prime Minister, we urge you to move swiftly on this issue so this land can once again grow food and the Canadian economy. Also, if you'd like a lawn sign for 24 Sussex, we'll make a road trip to Ottawa to drop one off!
