With a background spanning over 15 years, Karsh says, “I was hooked (on the sport) right from the beginning”. Taekwondo is the national martial art of Korea with a heavy emphasis on kicks and was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by various Korean martial artists as a blend of the indigenous Korean fighting styles of taekkyeon, gwonbeop, and subak, with influence from foreign martial arts, such as karate and Chinese martial arts. In 1973, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) was established to promote taekwondo specifically as an international sport. Since 2000, taekwondo has been one of only two Asian martial arts, the other being judo, that are included in the Olympic Games. It became a demonstration event at the 1988 games in Seoul, and an official medal event at the 2000 games in Sydney. In 2010, taekwondo was also accepted as a Commonwealth Games sport. Taekwondo was developed into a modern sport through painstaking research and experience by Taekwondo practitioners through their incessant upgrading of technical and spiritual refinement. At the same time, it has been firmly established as a real national martial art enabling the people to defend the nation. From the moment Karsh moved to Shelburne, he started to prepare for the opening of Shelburne Taekwondo. Karsh is working with a small group and hopes that local interest in the sport will continue to grow. Karsh tells the Free Press, “It's very rewarding working with the children and being a part of the community”. He went on to say he owes a big thank you to the following people for all of their support with the start up of his club: Michelle Janzen, Shelburne Free Press; Kim Fraser, CDRC; Lionel Chenette of LC's Creations and especially to his wife Linda Karsh.
