Royals girls hockey team in first tournament

District 4 girls hockey got underway with an opening day tournament at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Thursday, November 26, with four high schools taking part in the day long event.
Each team had three game with all teams meeting each other before the day was over.
The Centre Dufferin District High School Royals played their first game with an 8 a.m. start against Wellington Heights District High School.
The Royals returned for their second game with a 10:40 a.m. start against Norwell District.
The CDDHS team was trailing 2–0 in the second period but working hard to move the puck into the Norwell zone.
Norwell went ahead by three on a pass from behind the net then scored another on a shot tipped in past the goal line.
The Royals responded with a good effort late in the game and getting two goals from Morgan Gracey and Emily Hunwicks to end the game at 4–2.
“The girls came out hard in the third period, we won that period. The second period we were just building moment,” said CDDHS coach Kathy Rowbotham of the game against Norwell.
The Royals having been working hard over the past few years to build a competitive hockey program at CDDHS.
“This team over the last three years has gone from no wins at all to last year when we won two games and tied a few games,” said Royals coach Pete Jensen. “This team is starting to gain momentum and get some confidence in themselves.”
Rather than play a set schedule, high school girls hockey plays a series of day long tournaments with the results tallied to create the standings.
“There are five tournaments, four teams go in each tournament and one team sits out,” Explained Jensen of how the season works.
There are five high schools entered in District 4.
The Royals finished the day with a 2–1 win over Westside Secondary School.
The next tournament is scheduled for Thursday, December 3.
