Christmas spirit in full force With Christmas approaching there are lots of non profit organizations at work giving you plenty of opportunities to give back. Although it may be difficult to decide which one you want to help there are plenty of different causes. If you missed any of them last weekend, then you are in luck because they will be out in the community again this coming weekend. The Shelburne Police Department are holding their annual “Stuff a Cruiser” which will be held this Saturday in the No Frills parking lot, with donations going to help the Salvation Army and Dufferin Child and Family Services. While the Shelburne Fire Department will be at the Foodland/Giant Tiger plaza collecting unwrapped toys and non-perishable food Infinite Play presents Christmas Morning with Santa this Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and when you bring an unwrapped toy you will receive admission for only $5. All toys collected will be taken to the Shelburne Fire Department and added to their toy drive. Owner Virginia Millar tells the Free Press “items are needed for children over the age of ten, as well as feminine hygiene products, diapers and health and beauty items”. Shelburne Home Hardware is currently taking donations at the checkout for their “Donate a Plate” fundraising efforts to help the local schools with their Breakfast Club programs. As of Sunday they have raised $2,993 towards their goal of $5000, to which owner Bill Gilliam will match. There was a Breakfast with Santa hosted by Mairi MacRae owner of At Home Reality Inc. Brokerage this past Saturday which saw 375 people in attendance. This event raised just over $1000 for the Feral Cat Rescue as well as massive pile of cereal to be split between Hyland Heights, Centennial Hylands and Glenbrook Public Schools for the Breakfast Club. Rudolph pancakes were served to all children while the adults ate regular pancakes with sausage on the side. MacRae thanks all those who donated to the event, sending special recognition to Helen Fleming from Pete's Deli who provided all the coffee and bagels and to No Frills who donated gift cards towards the purchase of the food needed for the event. Prim Pickins held its last sale of the year where they collected items for the Feral Cat Rescue such as wet and dry food, litter and blankets. All who donated had the chance to win $100 worth of free Prim Pickins items! Main Street Café also had customers help to “Stuff a Cooler”, with non-perishable food items and toiletries for the local food bank. If you don't have anything to give, you may want to consider giving your time to the elderly in nursing homes that could just use someone to talk to. With so many options there is a way for everyone in our generous community to give back in one way or another.
