Full moon helps guide Santa’s sleigh This past Christmas, 2015, a full moon hung in the skies, illuminating the way for Santa as he made his deliveries to good boys and girls, worldwide. Jason Ashton captured this amazing picture of the “Christmas Moon”, also called a “Full Cold Moon” over Shelburne. This was the first full moon to occur on December 25th since 1977. The moon reached it peak size and perigee, at 6:11 a.m. on Christmas Day. December's full moon is known as a “Full Cold Moon,” because December nights are the longest of the year, and temperatures are typically cold.
