Sharks seek berth as Greater Metro league heads into playoffs

The Greater Metro Hockey League is finishing the final couple of games on the regular season schedule before heading into the playoffs.

The Shelburne Sharks travelled to Alliston on Thursday, February 11, to take on the second place Alliston Coyotes.

The Sharks left the ice with a loss leaving them with a 7-34 record for the season.

The Sharks have not been on home ice for the last couple of scheduled games with reasons cited by coaching staff as “a shortage of players” after illness swept through the club.

Going into the playoffs, the Shelburne team will be going into a playdown situation to try to secure a playoff berth to end the season.

The Tottenham Steam ended the season in first place in the Central Division with 82 points and a 41-1 record.

In second place the Alliston Coyotes wrapped up the season with 36-6 record and 58 points.

The Coyotes were leading the Division for most of the season before being eclipsed by the Steam in December.

In the playoffs, the bottom three teams will go into a playdown situation to vie for a berth in the playoffs.

The top seven teams will begin the first round.

The Tottenham team not only won the division they also finished first place overall when they topped the Kingsville Kings who were leading the GMHL for most of the season.

In the North Division, the South Muskoka Shield are in the top spot with 69 points, followed by the Timiskaming Titans in second place with 68 points.

The playoffs are scheduled to get underway next week with the final schedule not yet finalized.
