Alliston leading Penetang in Junior C finalBy Brian Lockhart The Alliston Junior C Hornets have a chance to win their ninth Georgian Mid Ontario Junior C League championship this weekend when they travel to Penetang for Games Three and Four of their final series this weekend. The Hornets are leading the series 2 – 1 after the opening games that took place on Alliston home ice. The championship series got underway on this past Friday night, March 4, at the New Tecumseth Recreation Center in Alliston. After a first period that saw the Hornets take a two goal lead, the Kings notched their first one early in the second frame. Alliston's Devon Gillham got his second of the game at the midway mark to make it 3 – 1 going into the final 20 minutes. The Hornets outscored the Kings 3 – 2 in the third, including another one from Gillham for the hat trick to end the game 6 – 3. Returning to Alliston home ice for game two, the Hornets dominated the ice for the full 60 minutes of play, but despite peppering Penetang goalie Andrew North with shots, they didn't have a lot of success at burying the puck. They scored three goals in the first period, but that was it for the night. The Kings notched one in the second. Penetang had a time out late the game and regrouped and managed to close the gap with a quick goal with 33 seconds left on the clock, but they couldn't find one more to tie the game and the Hornets left the ice with a 3 – 2 win, and now lead the series 2-0. The series will now head to Penetang for Games Three and Four this weekend. The Hornets are seven-time League champions over the past eight seasons with their only break coming in 2014 when they were bested by the Penetang Kings in the championship. The winner of the GMOHL title will go on to vie at the Provincial level for the Schmalz Cup Junior C championship. |
