Shelburne Legion prepares for upcoming elections

In a candid interview with President of the Shelburne Legion, Branch 220, Lesa Peat expressed her hopes of being re-elected as President for a third term in the upcoming election to be held on Tuesday, April 26.

For the past two years, Peat has made an impression on her fellow Legion Members as a strong leader and a team player. As an almost permanent fixture at the Legion, she can be found taking on many roles at all of the events held at the Legion.

“I never give someone a task I wouldn't do myself,” she says. “Working together is why we have become so successful.”

Under the leadership of Peat, the Legion has seen many upgrades such as the back parking lot, which was totally gutted and then repaved with parking spaces clearly marked, as well as the resurfacing of the floors, painting of both the Bar and Museum rooms, and the front entrance door being made accessible. And we can't forget the brand new motion activated sliding accessible doors that recently went in the back hall entrance.

“I try to give the community what they like,” says Peat.

And what they like are wing nights paired with the great line up of entertainment that is always provided, which has helped to steadily increase their numbers.

Taking advantage of all of their resources and using the kitchen when it wasn't in use by having Micah's Kitchen throughout the winter on Wednesdays, Thursdays and alternating Fridays has been greatly received by those using the facility, such as the dart and euchre leagues, as well as many others in Shelburne.

And last but not least, did you know that since taking the helm, Peat has been able to bring in and offer eleven varieties of beer on draft as well as being able to introduce and stock many other favourites beverages for the over 19 crowd to enjoy?

Along with her Legion duties, Peat is an entrepreneur and has her own Property Maintenance Company. You can see some of her work when looking at Mrs. Mitchells' (local restaurant) beautiful gardens that are frequently used as the backdrop for wedding pictures in this area.

Peat is a huge sports enthusiast with ties to ball hockey and broom hockey in Shelburne for many years. She also sits on, or has sat on the Heritage Committee, the Fiddle Park Committee and the Fiddleville Committee. She is also responsible for writing the weekly Shelburne Legion Branch 220 articles that can be found in the Shelburne Free Press.

“Currently, we are upgrading the back hall's bar and looking at getting new industrial refrigerators,” Peat tells us. “Moving forward I would like to see more renovations done to the back hall to make it more appealing to rent out for more venues such as weddings.”

With the upcoming election Peat says “I would like to send out big huge thank you to long time member, Linda Orvis who has been my mentor throughout my entire time as president.”
