Road Heavy make for Explosive night at Legion

Despite the power outages around Shelburne, the Royal Canadian Legion was rocking out will full power on Saturday night when the Shelburne Kinsmen presented The Road Heavy in concert.

This event saw three bands of varying genres take the stage to entertain the almost full house in order to raise money for a pole barn to be erected at Fiddlepark.

Up first was a relatively new band, Visual Negative.

When speaking with band members, Kyle, who is on lead guitar and vocals, Ryan who is also vocals as well as bass guitar, followed up by Andrew on the drums, we learn that they have only been together three months.

This band played a half-hour set covering a total of seven songs from the 90s rock era, such as Kettle Bones by the Tragically Hip and Tweeter and the Monkey Men by the Headstones.

They sounded fantastic for only being together a short period of time.

Next to take the stage was Blackdog Ballroom who took the stage for 45 minutes, performing twelve songs. This band consisted of four members with frontman Michael looking like a rock start right out of the eighties.

His Rod Stewart-style hair and shoes, which bore the British Flag, really set the mood for what they gave us.

This band, which has been together for five years, say they often get compared to The Clash, as they have a female bass player, Hayley, who totally rocked her guitar.

This high energy band gave me a feel like the band Oasis, with their British flare and mixture of original tunes with some old favourites.

Blackdog Ballroom got their name from a pub in Manchester England and its suits the band perfectly.

Recently, they released a new album titled “This is Blackdog Ballroom” which can be found on iTunes. Singer Michael tells us, “We are here to satisfy the soul for Rock and Roll.”

Last to take the stage for just over an hour was headliner The Road Heavy.

This Southern Blues Rock style band who recently won Rock 95's Local and Loud competition have quite a lot of accomplishments under their belt considering they have only been together for two years.

Frontwoman Jules has a set of pipes on her that could compete with the best of them.

This girl can sure belt it out and gave the band that something special that sets them apart from other bands. Her ability to hit and maintain high notes sent shivers down my spine.

Councillor Dan Sample, Kinsmen, reported that there were about 150 people in attendance at the event which raised $1,000 to go towards the pole barn.
