Wolves Midget LL2 win Georgian Triangle title

The Georgian Triangle Local League championship came down to an exciting final game when the two Shelburne Midget teams faced each other in the final game at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Monday, March 28.

The Wolves LL1 and LL2 teams played two series games with each team winning one game before heading to the final do-or-die match to decide the series winner.

The final game saw back and forth action for the full period with neither team able to get on the scoreboard.

LL2's Mitchell Skillton scored the opener early in the second period on an assist from Porter Cavey.

The LL1 team tied it up on a goal from Cam Newton two minutes later.

The teams returned for a third period showdown that would decide the championship.

LL2's Just Besley scored at 29 seconds into the third to break the tie but, again, the game was tied when LL1's Carter Ferrier took the feed from Luke Russell to score and make it a 2-2 game with just over five minutes remaining on the clock.

The winning goal came with 1:58 remaining when Mitchell Skilton scored on an assist from Liam McLeod to end the game 3-2 and give the LL2 squad the championship.

"It was a great series and a great game. We fought to the end every time," said Wolves LL2 forward Fred Dickson. "We weren't scoring a lot but their goalie was really good. We got a lot of shots off at least."

After a long season, the teams have played their last for 2016.

"I thought we came together as a team. We outworked them in their end every period," said LL2 forward Justin Besley of the final game. "We were getting the rebounds off this goalie - every opportunity we took the shot."

It was a good season for Shelburne Minor Hockey, but now players can focus on summer sports as the ice is now out of the Shelburne arena.
