Get Dirt-y with the Mono Mulmur Citizens’ Coalition

Protecting and restoring our soil has been a prominent local and global issue and on Saturday, April 30, the Mono Mulmer Citizens' Coalition will be addressing just that.

The presentation, “The Real Dirt on Dirt” will take place on April 30 from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at Monora Park, 600 Monora Park Drive in Mono.

MC2 member Arnold De Graaff, says the community-based organization is tackling the topic to address “the loss and decline of topsoil”, a global concern that “directly affects the world's food supply.”

“A drought or a flood and a failed harvest can soon lead to large-scale starvation or food riots on different continents,” he says. “In those times the world's food supply is taxed to the limit.”

He says the situation is precarious.

“We are losing about one per cent of agricultural soil a year; that is about 20 per cent to 30 per cent during the last decades,” says Mr. De Graaff. “Erosion, acidification, salinization, loss of species and microorganisms, climate change, and overuse of fertilizers and pesticides have all played their part.”

Locally, Mr. De Graaff notes “the recent case of an application to dump” what some suspected might be contaminated fill dirt on agricultural land in the area “has brought this issue of protecting our topsoil close to home.”

In this case, he says, it was fortunate that the Normal Farm Practices Protection Board (NFPPB) decided against and rejected the application. He compliments the Town of Mono, saying “its advisers and lawyers have represented and served the community well in this regard.”

He says he hopes it will set a precedent for future applications, “so that Toronto will no longer see Dufferin County as a dumping ground for fill dirt.“

The April 30 event will address the soil situation in Dufferin County, the ongoing concern about fill dirt, and an organic farmer's perspective on the primacy on our soil.

Mr. De Graaff reports that the main presenter, Graham Corbett, an organic farmer from Fiddle Foot Farm “will give a surprising and intriguing account of what it takes to develop really healthy soil and to grow nutritious produce and meat.”

Another important part of the April 30 agenda will be a presentation by the coordinators of Headwaters' Food and Farming Alliance (HFFA) “Farm to School” program. Refreshments will be served.
