Dufferin Reads: One Book One County:

What a fabulous event! Kim Thúy, not only a beautiful writer but a wonderful dynamic and entertaining speaker, truly captivated the audience at Dufferin Museum & Archives alternately having us crying at one point when she talked about her experience as a “boat person” and laughing as she entertained us with other experiences in her life.

Dufferin Reads has another partner as the Dufferin Museum & Archives joined the libraries and BookLore in presenting this event every year.

Laura Camileri tied in some historic facts about Ontario immigrants to round out the stories Kim brought to us. We have presented such a wide variety of genres and authors over the past eight years, it will be a challenge to come up with an equally great author and book for next year.

Children's Programs:

Paws to Read is a wonderful fun program for children who would like to increase their reading skills.  Mac, the therapeutic dog is great at listening to someone read. He knows that it is his job to be attentive to the children reading. His owner, Darlene, is there to help as well, if someone needs extra help with words, etc. So come and see Mac. He is here every Tuesday at 3:45 to 4:45. Book an appointment today

Story time is every Friday at 10.30. We have lots of fun with crafts, songs, stories, and other great activities. There is a new theme every week. So don't miss it. Please give us a call if you plan to attend.

The Super Readers program is almost finished: there are only two more Tuesdays. However, this is a springboard for our TD Summer Reading Club so we encourage you to look for information about that over the next month or so. Keep checking the paper and the web site each week for details. Call the Library is 519-925-2168 for more information.Come in and check out some of our many books, we have a great selection of board books, picture books, novels and graphic novels, as well as nonfiction books for children to read, for fun or for projects for school. We also have computers with educational programs for the children to use.

Teen Scene:

The day finally came! Last Thursday, E.K. Johnston came to the library to talk about her experience as an up-and-coming Canadian young adult author, both with regard to the actual writing process, as well as the process of being published.

She provided so many insights and instantly captivated an audience of youth and adults. What we as library staff always enjoy are the subtle influences on an author's writing. For example, did you know Johnston's latest title, Exit, Pursued by a Bear (a fantastic, heartbreaking, beautifully written novel about overcoming a serious traumatic event) gets its namesake from one of Shakespeare's stage directions? Neither did we, but we do now!

Per request, our Teens are continuing to develop their creative writing skills throughout the month of May. Each Thursday night, Teen Scene members will be given a different writing prompt at the beginning of the session, leading into 45 minutes of creative writing, followed by 15 minutes of discussion of the works. Positive feedback is given by the group for each piece, and spelling and grammar advice is given by the YA Librarian, where needed. It is a wonderfully open group, so feel free to drop by for any and all of these sessions.

Book club will take place on Thursday, May 26, where we will discuss Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon, as well as Matched by Ally Condie. Pizza included.
