Celebrating Education in Shelburne with “a thirst to learn”

Monday marked the opening of Education Week with celebration ceremonies held at Centre Dufferin District High School (CDDHS).

CDDHS Principal Pat Hamilton started off the May 2 evening by welcoming guests, educators and the staff of both CDDHS and Hyland Heights Elementary School, which co-hosted the event.

He said he was proud to be Principal in a school board with such a “powerful vision” for its students.

Education Week 2016 takes place from May 2 to 6 - a time for students, staff and members of the community to celebrate student achievement and teaching excellence.

The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) extends Education Week into a month of celebrations, featuring events and activities that showcase the excellence of our schools.

Saugeen Nation Elder Shirley John brought traditional greetings to the audience and a message of oneness and “living in balance and harmony with the earth,” where “enlightened teachers remind us of the way we were instructed to live as a people.”

Mark Bailey, Chairperson for the UGDSB, stressed the importance of the Board's “Well Being Initiative.”

Addressing the diversity of student's emotional needs supports their academic success he praised CDDHS for the good work they were doing in this area. He promised students that the Board would work to transform the education system to one that, rather than forced upon them, engaged them – a system where “success is measured by a thirst to learn.”

Excellent entertainment for the evening was provided by Ms. Parson's CDDHS Musical Theatre Class with excerpts from Cinderella; Ms. Voigt's Grade 2/3 Hyland Heights class who sang and played hand bells to “Amazing Grace;” and Mrs. Millsap's and Mrs. Mesesnel's Grades 3 and 3/4 classes who played “Scarborough Fair” on recorders. O Canada was led by Ronique Saunders of CDDHS.

Mr. Hamilton told the Shelburne Free Press that the Official Opening at CDDHS not only allowed the community to come and hear from students, “but our Board's educational leaders about how we are putting this year's theme ‘Learn, Lead, Inspire...Together' into practice every day.”

It was also a good chance for the community to see the school's “recently renovated front foyer and Learning Commons,” said the Principal.

“The UGDSB encourages both parents and the general public to witness the quality of work produced by students,” says Sue Krueger, Executive Assistant to the Director for UGDSB.

A list of events is posted on the Board's website: www.ugdsb.on.ca.

“I think it is really important to celebrate the amazing work and learning done in our public education system,” said Mr. Hamilton.

“The Centre Dufferin school community has incredibly talented and dedicated students, teachers and support staff who accomplish incredible things every day. Education Week gives us the opportunity to highlight the successes we see all year long.”

Wendy Clarke, Principal of Hyland Heights E.S. closed the ceremony Monday night saying, “We are all striving to learn, lead and inspire in order to raise well rounded individuals.”
