Junior C Vets give up first loss

By Brian Lockhart

The Shelburne Junior C Vets' first game of the year didn't turn out as planned, but there's a long way to go in the season.

The Vets hosted the Halton Hills Bulldogs at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Friday, May 6, to kick off the 2016 season.

The first period of Friday's game was a pretty even matched 20 minutes with the game tied at three late in the period.

Halton got the go ahead goal with less than a minute left in the period to make it 4-3 going into the second frame.

Shelburne first period goals came from Nathan Marshal, and two from Ty McCallum.

It was the second period where the Vets got into trouble and had a defensive break-down that allowed Halton Hills to score nine unanswered goals, giving the Bulldogs a 13-3 lead and putting all the pressure on the Vets to close the gap in the third period.

The Vets returned with some third period success scoring early on a goal by Darren Tayler, then finishing the game with three late goals from James Willard, Ty McCallum, and Cooper Lammie for a 17-7 final.

The win places the Bulldogs at the top of the standings going undefeated three games into the season.

Next up, the Vets will return to their home venue at the CDRC this Friday, May 13, to host the Six Nations Warriors.

Game time is 8 p.m.
