Junior Cubs win inaugural NDBL game

By Brian Lockhart

The Mansfield Cubs junior division team won their first ever game as a club in the North Dufferin Baseball League with a 9-1 win over the Midland Twins on the diamond in Mansfield on Saturday, May 14.

The Cubs got off to a good start bringing in five runs in the first inning that set the tone for the rest of the game.

Midland got on the scoreboard in the third inning on a single to centre field that brought in a run.

The Cubs' Jake Nicholson hit a double in the fourth quarter then advanced to third base, but the Cubs couldn't capitalize and the side retired on the next at bat.

Two more runs were added to the Mansfield total in the fifth inning starting when Jordan Metz got on base with a single, then advanced to third on a steal to put men on second and third base.

Two more singles from Stuart Manson and Matt Cameron widened the score to 7-1.

The highlight of the game was Jake Currie's two-run home run in the sixth inning that ended the game with a 9-1 Mansfield win.

The Cubs played a solid defensive game that shut down the Midland squad and kept them from getting on base in the last three innings.

"We didn't necessarily have a whole bunch of spectacular diving plays, but nobody messed up any ground balls,” said Cubs coach Dave Metz. “There was a couple of plays from centre field that were pretty good. It's only a four team league. Almost all of our team are first year players."

The talent pool is deep on this squad and Metz said they got a lot of pitching capability on the team.

"We had an exhibition game and we decided to do one inning at a time, and we had ten pitchers," Metz explained.

The Cubs will be in New Lowell on Monday, May 23, to take on the Knights.

They return to the Mansfield diamond on May 27, to host the Ivy Rangers.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6.30 p.m.
