All of her work incorporates music in some way, especially classic rock. John Lennon and Jim Morrison are well known rock icons, but not for many teenagers. Shawna's love for music classic rock became her inspiration for her paintings, “A lot of my motivation for my work comes from personal interests, but the majority of it is based on music.” One look at Shawna's work and it's evident that she is talented, but she only began pursuing art seriously in Grade 9, “I always drew when I was younger, but only started to focus on art at the beginning of high school.” Three short years of focusing on her art and now Shawna's work is in the spotlight at Orangeville Theatre. The theatre recently presented ‘Jive to Jagger – A Century of Song', and according to Shawna's mother (Doralee Munns) her work fit perfectly. “The theatre believed that Shawna's use of music and classic rock was perfect. Her paintings will be on display until July 28th, and help promote the production,” she said. Shawna is extremely happy that her work is on display at the Orangeville Theatre, and that she is beginning to receive recognition outside of school, “I won arts night at St. Thomas of Aquinas for two consecutive years, but it's a completely different feeling to see my work being displayed in public.” Although her work is beginning to become popular throughout the area, Shawna quickly stated that all her paintings have a meaning behind them, “I like if my work helps send a message. Painting is a way to get my emotions out in a form that people can relate too. In my opinion, pictures speak louder than words and paintings can grab much more attention than anything else.” Doralee is extremely proud of her daughter, and truly believes that Shawna's passion for classic rock has given her an advantage, “Shawna is an old soul, trapped in a young woman's body. Her love for music, media, and painting allows her to create unique works of art.” For more information or to purchase Shawna's work, contact doemunns@xplornet.com or call 519 940-3709.
