Junior C Vets take loss to Caledon

By Brian Lockhart

It was the first period that did all the damage for the Shelburne Junior C Vets on Friday night's game against the Caledon Bandits.

The Vets couldn't get out of the starting gate and were outscored 7-2 in the first period.

Shelburne's goals came from Charlie McCannell and Kayden Morley.

Shelburne did a much better job when they re-grouped and returned for the second period of action.

This time, they lead off with a pair of goals from Ty McCallum and held the Caledon squad to two goals to make it a 9-4 game with one period remaining.

Producing some good defensive moves in the third period, the Vets held the Bandits to two goals in the final frame.

James Willard scored on the only third period Shelburne goal to make it an 11-5 loss for the Vets.

"It was a tough, chippy game, but it was well fought," said Vet's Liam Greensides. "There was a lot defensive issues in the first period. We just broke down and weren't communicating."

After going over the plan in the dressing room, the Vets seemed to get it together when they returned for the second period.

"It was well fought; we stepped up," said Greensides of the third period.

The Vets have been struggling this season, so far winning only one game. That was back on June 3, when they came out on top with a 12-10 win over Brantford.

They have three games left on the regular season schedule.

The Wilmot Wild are currently in first place in the West division and in the League standings with an 11-2 record and 22 points for the season.

Fergus is in second place in the division followed by Halton Hills.

The Vets will return to their home floor at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Friday, June 24, to host the Fergus Thistles.

Game time is 8 p.m.
