Shelburne Library NewsShelburne Library News By Rose Dotten The news this week is the huge success of our culminating summer reading program events and the thanks we owe to all the wonderful folks who supported us. The Children and Teen Carnival on Thursday, featured two authors – Maria Gallaugher for the younger children and Erin Bow for teens and adults. Each event featured more than 25 attendees which was a great audience for our authors. Almost 10 dozen hot dogs were consumed and we thank Chef (Board Chair) Geoff Dunlop for cooking and serving up to all the families. Our thanks also go out to Bill Gillam from Shelburne Home Hardware who lent us the BBQ, covered canopy and set it up for us here complete with tongs and flipper! Wow, that was so helpful and, quoting, Bill, he was so happy to do whatever he could, so “Kids can have more books!” Additionally, we had face painting for the younger kids and henna art for the older ones by Sohayla Smith, who worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon AND evening. Josh Oatman provided music and added a festive tone to the event. To top it off, Jade, Jeanne and Briana organized games in the parking lot and in the KTH room. There was no end to the fun! A thanks too to the Town works crew who barricaded off the parking lot so our youngsters could be active and safe for the day. TD Summer Reading Club Grand Finale: The final event was held on Saturday and all our great readers were recognized! In total the children read 2,113 books this summer and participated in a number of really great activities. Teen Summer Reading Challenge: Our teens worked very hard to complete the weekly challenges and read a total of 281 hours altogether. They actively participated in the Kerplunk and Frisbee challenges at the Youth Carnival and really loved the henna art. Our summer programs are ended for now but will resume again in September, so watch for announcements on Facebook and our website. The other event in which we at SPL were involved which was a huge success was Mystery and Mayhem in the Hills of Mulmur held at Dufferin County Museum last Sunday, August 21. The event was sold out several days before. Authors, Ian Hamilton, Steve Burrows, with Nancy Frater stepping in as Inger Ash Wolfe who was ill and moderator, Ken Weber delighted the audience throughout the afternoon. The Globe Restaurant provided the tasty tidbits, Steamwhistle Brewery, the beer and Southbrook Winery, the wine to make it all a very special event. To add to the enjoyment of the audience, we had a cast of actors greeting guests, Miss Marple (Sharon Martin), Sherlock Holmes (David Nairn), the English Bobby (Paul Nancecivell) and Dr. Watson (Wayne Townsend). This was the second year of the event conceived by Janet Horner from Mulmur Council with support of committee members, Nancy Frater, BookLore, Frances MacFarlane, Phyllis Robinson, Marian Gallaugher, Anne McMillen, Katharin Cowan, and Rose Dotten, SPL.
