Rowing Club competes in regatta

By Brian Lockhart

The Island Lake Rowing Club (ILRC) took part in the Tony Fooks Regatta on Saturday, August 20, in Port Credit.

The event was hosted by the Don Rowing Club in Mississauga.

It is interesting to note the water that is in Island Lake where the club is based, eventually flows south to Lake Ontario and the rowers competed on the same water that once filled the lake at their home venue.

The ILREC sent 12 athletes - ten rowers and two coxies - and two rowing coaches to the Port Credit regatta.

This particular regatta was created as a recreational style event and offers entry level rowers a chance to take part and learn more about the sport and what it takes to be competitive on the water.

Over all, the ILRC entered 14 crews in various rowing disciplines. They competed in sweep to scull, boat from doubles to eights, and in a category entry which included youth to adult, to generation.

It was the first time competing outside for Island Lake for many of the rowers.

Several of the rowers felt confident to move up a notch in competition levels and although classified as a youth, entered adult level races.

The ILRC appreciated the efforts of the Don Rowing Club in hosting a well-planned event.
