We were delighted with the number of folks who came to the library last Friday evening to experience our Literacy, Living and Learning experiences. The “Bookish Bites” Dungeon Bars, Killer Cereal cookies, Handcuff croissants and more, were very popular and, by the end of the evening, were all gone! Folks participated in the six-word Memoires wall, enjoying Joey's Teas and Mary Lazier's presentation of humourous and informative facts about some Dufferin County residents who are featured in her book, Stars of Dufferin County. Jade did a workshop on Ancestry and lots of folks were surprised at what they discovered about their ancestors. Remember, Ancestry is free at your library! Kudos to the staff for all the wonderful treats.   Reading Corner Check out our lovely reading corner when you are in: the fireplace has been installed and once the electrical wiring is complete, we will have a warm and friendly ambience in the library. This is due to the generosity of a couple of library patrons who donated funding for this project.   Children's Programs: The “Paws to Read” program is on holiday for the moment but Mac (and Darlene) will be back on October 19, continuing Wednesdays from 3.30 to 4.30 p.m. for any child who would like to practice reading to our therapeutic dog, Mac. There are four 15-minute sessions, but you need to book ahead of time as they fill up quickly. It is a wonderful program for anyone who is a little shy of reading out loud or needs a little practice with his or her reading skills. Story time has resumed its schedule on Friday mornings @ 10.30 for children ages 2 and up. LEGO will begin after school starting Wednesday, September 28 at 3.30 to 4.30, for ages six and up. Please register for any of these programs by calling the Library at 519-925-2168, so we can be prepared for everyone.   Teen Scene Last week was PACKED full of fun and excitement for our Teens as a result of Banned Books Week. Fun fact: if you've read Harry Potter, you've read a banned book. Our Teens spent their book club meeting learning about, and quite passionately defending, their right to intellectual freedom! A list of books which have been challenged or banned in the past was presented, and Teens then spent time crafting some very compelling arguments as to why banning books is poor practice. It was great to see youth so engaged and impassioned about something so near and dear to libraries. Teen Scene returns this week with a fall-inspired craft, Thursday, October 6 @ 6 p.m. We will also be hosting a Scary Movie Marathon (Scary Movie Saturday) on Saturday, October 29th, more details to come. Costumes are encouraged on this day!   New Books: We are just in the midst of ordering our new fall and winter books, so keep watching our website and reading this column.   Fiction: Nine Women, One Dress by Jane L.
