Hornets take first loss of the season

By Brian Lockhart

The Alliston Junior C Hornets' winning streak came to an end Friday night, November 11, when they took a 4 – 3 loss to the visiting Schomberg Cougars at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.

The squad was undefeated after 17 games going into Friday's game with 16 wins and one tie with the Penetang Kings on November 6.

The big surprise was the failure of the Hornets to score in the first period – something they have been doing consistently all season.

The Cougars took an early lead scoring at just 37 seconds into the first period.

They followed up with a second goal on a power play opportunity before the second period was a minute into play.

The Alliston squad battled back and notched two second period goals from Stephen Nosad and Carson Gandy to make it a tie game, but the Schomberg team broke the tie with a late period goal and another with only five seconds left in the period to make it a 4 – 2 game and put all the pressure on the Hornets to respond in the final frame.

Alliston's Brandon Washer scored late in the period to close the gap to one goal with the Hornets on a five-on-three power play when Schomberg took two penalties for boarding and tripping.

The Cougars managed to kill the clock for the 4 – 3 win.

The Hornets maintain first place in the North Conference with 33 points - three ahead of the second place Stayner Siskins and 15 points ahead of the third place Huntsville Otters.

The Hornets will be back on home ice on Friday, November 18, when they host the Caledon Golden Hawks and the NTRC.

Game time is 7.30 p.m.
