Shelburne Auto and Cycle has the Giving Spirit

By Michelle Janzen

Chris and Carly Ferris, owners of Shelburne Auto and Cycle know firsthand the how cancer can affect a family, both having lost a parent to this horrible disease.

Having learned along their journeys, they decided to donate in memory of Lynne Ferris, Chris's mother, who succumbed to cancer five years ago this December at Headwaters Health Care Centre (Headwaters).

Going through this with a parent made them all too familiar with how being at a hospital for treatment can make time seem like it's standing still. With nothing much for patients to do while treatments are taking place, they decided to do something about it to make the time pass by quicker and, hopefully, easier.

Unfortunately, most of us have come to realize that cancer doesn't care if you are young or old, or where you live. It doesn't care what your spiritual path is. It doesn't care if you are rich or poor. It couldn't care less about your race, gender, sex, or your sexual preference. Cancer just has no biases. Cancer isn't fair.

The three main cancer treatments are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, with treatment being given at a hospital by cancer specialists call oncologists.

The length of your appointment time will vary depending on the type of treatment you are receiving. Locally, the Headwaters' Chemotherapy Program is affiliated with William Osler Health System (WOHS), with four oncologists from WOHS, who take turns visiting weekly, to provide care for active chemotherapy patients, new patients and follow-up appointments at Headwaters.

Patients receiving treatment at Headwaters do so in the Dr. Andrew C. Vermeer Chemotherapy Suite, which was opened in 2003. The suite was designed to enhance patient comfort while they are undergoing chemotherapy treatment. It includes a private bathroom for cancer patients and a kitchenette to allow for food preparation for patients and families.

As you can see, receiving treatment can result in a lot of time spent at the hospital. So, the Ferris' started holding a golf tournament annually, where mostly friends and family attended, raising the most to date at this years, a whopping $7,000.

They also received donations from TD Smith Transport and Giant Tiger in Shelburne this year, enabling them to donate well over 60 comfort bags, which included toothpaste, toothbrush, a fleece blanket, a journal, a notepad, a word search game book or a crossword book, as well as an array of other goodies that you usually should take to receive this kind of treatment.

This year, Carly and Chris tell us “With the kind donations from everyone we are excited to be able to donate eight iPads and eight Otter Boxes this year, along with the bags.”

“I remember how boring it was to be just sitting waiting at the hospital with nothing to do,” says Carly. “With so many questions we wanted to ask, if we didn't write them down, sometimes we forgot until after the doctor left. Knowing now what we wish we knew then, we have filled the bags with everything that we could have used while going through this process with our parents.”

This project involves the entire family, children included, and it was really nice to see them all helping to unload all these goodies at the hospital on Monday, November 28, much to the delight of Headwaters staff and, I'm sure, future patients at the Centre.
