Skates Alive coming to ShelburneBy Brian Lockhart Figure skaters from around the region will be coming to Shelburne this Saturday, December 3, to compete at 2016 Skates Alive. The Midway West Area will feature skaters from Shelburne, Brampton, Orangeville, Erin, Fergus, and Acton. This will be a major competition for skating clubs in Central Ontario. The event will feature CanSkate, Junior and Senior level skaters showcasing their skills in free skate, ice dance, elements, and a mini Battle of the Blades competition. Over 100 skaters from across the Midway West Region are expected to attend the event, which will be held at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex. "We will have around 120 skaters as well as coaches that will attend," explained Mark Camilleri, communications chair, Skate Canada Shelburne. "The judges are all from outside the area and are sent by the Central Ontario region. Our club is part of the region called Midway West. Skaters range in age from seven to eight up to 16 and 17 years old." Skaters competed in different categories and also in their skill level. "There are five different categories of events," Mr. Camilleri explained. "There are individual elements, free skates where skaters have created their own routines and dances. There are several skills levels involved." The Skates Alive event will run all day on Saturday, December 3, beginning at 8 a.m. and running through to 8 p.m. onĀ Saturday evening. |
