Escorted by members of the Shelburne Police Service, the Torch Run got underway at Fiddle Park on the 2nd line and wound through the town before finishing at the No Frills store on Highway 89. “The number one goal is to raise money,” said event organizer Constable Paul Neumann of the Shelburne Police Service. “But events like this also serve to unify the community. This is the 26th year of the Torch Run but the second consecutive year here in Shelburne. Hundreds of police forces around the world take part.” Sixteen run teams took part in the event and included teams from local businesses, schools, and public service such as police, paramedics, and town councillors and workers. Several runners were selected to carry the Flame of Hope to the lead the group through the course. The Torch Run has two main goals: To raise funds to benefit the programs of Special Olympics, and to raise awareness for programs associated with Special Olympics. Along with the efforts of those who take part in the actual run, the event relies on corporate sponsorship to top up the amount raised. This year's sponsors included John's No Frills, Pete's Donuts, KTH, Shelburne Free Press, Orangeville Citizen, Fines Home Hardware, Trillium Ford, The Highland Companies, Dufferin Auto Centre, and Stock Transportation. The Scotia Bank on First Street in Orangeville matched up to $5000 in funds raised for the event. “We had 98 registered runners before the even started,” said Constable Neumann. “This was a four and a-half kilometre route, but it's a community event, not a race. The idea is to bring awareness and bring the community together.” The event concluded at the finish line in the parking lot at No Frills with a barbecue and some speeches to thank those involved in this year's run.
