Get out and have fun with the Amazing Race

By Brock Weir

If you're looking for a sense of fun and adventure but don't want to venture too close to home, the students at Centre Dufferin District High School have just the thing – and all for a good cause.

For the second year running, CDDHS's Business Leadership class will be spicing up their 16th annual Hair Off for Headwaters Fundraiser with the “Amazing Race for Headwaters” – and this time, members of the public are invited to submit a team and join in the fun.

Set for May 23, Amazing Race for Headwaters will see teams of two fan out around Shelburne encountering various challenges along the way. All proceeds will go to the Cancer Care Centre at Headwaters.

“We had the Amazing Race last year for the first time and it went really well with over 30 people participating and everyone had lots of fun doing it,” says teacher Julia Senese. “This year, we are encouraging the community to do it as well – parents with their young kids – and the students are organizing it all. The Amazing Race takes them throughout Shelburne to different locations around Town and it is going to be very similar to the show with lots of road blocks, detours and pit stops they have to complete.

“It's a fun way to spend an afternoon, and a good way to spend some time with friends and family just knowing that all the money is going to cancer care, and with it going to local cancer care I think that will make people feel really good about participating. It is nice to bring people of all ages to participate together.”

The Amazing Race for Shelburne will be just a pre-cursor to the main event: the 16th Annual Hair Off for Headwaters the following day, which will once again see high school students lop off their locks all in the name of cancer funding.

Since it was first spearheaded by a CDDHS teacher on their own cancer journey who saw firsthand the need for local cancer funding, Hair Off has become a proud tradition of the local high school.

Each year, students wait to get their hair cut because they know they want to take part, says Ms. Senese, noting that this year alone they have over 15 students stepping up to cut their hair.

“A lot of them have been growing it out so it can be donated for a wig,” she says. “A lot of our students know people who have been affected [by cancer] and they really go out of their way to participate. The students can't wait for it and we are fortunate that we have had a lot of businesses either give us prizes or money and then there are the community members who sponsor the kids getting haircuts.”

Involved in Hair Off for the last five years, Ms. Senese says she has seen real benefits emerge with having the Business Leadership students take charge in Hair Off for Headwaters and now the Amazing Race.

“They are all working towards the same goal,” she says. “It is good to see them working together and they always give 100 per cent effort in this project, and it makes them feel good knowing that the money is staying local. They organize this from beginning to end.

“We had fantastic reviews of the Amazing Race last year [and now members of the public] can be outside, get some exercise, and spend time with friends or family – and, of course, it will be fun!”
