‘Skating for Susan’, Muskies Fight Cancer Night coming up on Saturday

Written By MARNI WALSH

A ceremonial puck will drop at 8 p.m. on January 12th at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (CDRC) when the Shelburne Muskies hockey team will host Fight Cancer Night.

This is the second year for the event, which was originally inspired by team Treasurer, Susan Hogan, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2017, but faithfully continued to do her important work for the team.

Susan Hogan's son, Tyler, was a key player for the Muskies at the time of his mother's diagnosis, and is now head coach of the much loved, hometown team. The Muskies have dedicated their 2018-19 season in memory of Susan Hogan, who after a courageous battle, passed away last summer, in August of 2018.

“Like so many families,” says team President Kerry Young, “the Muskies family has been touched by cancer over recent years.” She says, “Every player on the Muskies is playing in support of, or in memory of, a loved one or friend.

Following a tradition started with the first Fight Cancer Night, the President says the team “will be sporting custom, dedicated jerseys for the evening,” designed in the emblematic pink that has become widely associated with the fight against breast cancer.

In their first Fight Cancer Night in 2018, the Muskies' hockey team raised close to $3,000 for the Cancer Centre at the Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville. Proceeds for the evening are raised through a raffle table that will, once again, feature an assortment of exciting items. As well, the Muskies will be offering ribbons and accepting donations for Fight Cancer Night at the door of the CDRC as attendees arrive.

Kerry Young says the team is “thankful to local businesses and sponsors for their generosity in donating to the raffle table.”

Team warm-up starts at 7:30 p.m. and the game will get underway at 8 p.m. when the Shelburne Muskies face off against the Durham Thundercats. The Shelburne team sends their appreciation to everyone who can help to make this Saturday, January 12th another successful Fight Cancer Night at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.
