NDBL All–Star game rained out

You can't control the weather, and you can't play baseball when you have a steady heavy downpour and a water logged diamond.

“We got in two-thirds of an inning. We didn't even get through one inning,” said North Dufferin Baseball League secretary Scott Anderson. “The East team in the senior division got three runs, but that was it.”

The All-star event was slated for a 1 p.m. start at the diamond in Mansfield, but a steady rain in the morning returned in the early afternoon to wash out the venue before both teams barely got warmed up.

Spectators and players alike, instead huddled under tent cover to imbibe a few at the licensed event.

The second game - the Junior division - was cancelled outright when it was determined that the diamond wasn't going to drain enough to play.

The Senior division game pitted a squad made up of players from the East division verses the West and was the 49th annual Senior All-star game.

The Junior division was scheduled for a 3 p.m. start with the ‘Dingers' – made up from players from Alliston, Barrie, Creemore, Innisfil, Orillia, and Stayner, taking on the ‘Giants' who pulled their players from the same clubs.

It would have been an interesting game to see players from the same squads who normally back each other up, take to trying to out each other during play.

It was the 20th time the Junior division had a turn-out for an All-star game.

The NDBL was established in 1930 with four teams from Dufferin County.

Today, the League spans the Counties of Dufferin and Simcoe and Regions Peel and York with 14 senior teams and six junior teams.

Despite spending more time in the beer tent than on the diamond, Anderson said they still might reschedule the All-star game for a later date.

“We probably will,” he said. “We hope to figure that out.”

Rescheduling can be difficult as the season wears on with regularly scheduled games already planned out.

If not, there's always next year.
