Melancthon Mayor to run for wardenship in 2014

Dear editor:

Today I am announcing that I am putting my name forward o become the Warden of Dufferin County in 2014.

I am pleased to announce that Ken McGhee, Deputy Mayor of the Town of Mono, will be moving my nomination and equally pleased to announce that Warren Maycock, Deputy Mayor of the Town of Orangeville will be seconding the nomination.

Since my election as Mayor of Melancthon in 2010, discussions have occurred around the county table as to my goals. I have stated from the beginning that I would seek the wardenship in 2014. My feeling was that I wanted to sit on every standing committee to get a true sense of the workings of county before putting my name forward.

When I was appointed to the county in September of 2008, I sat on Community Service/Dufferin Oaks until the end of that term. I was then selected to serve as chair of the Roads Committee in 2011, moving to Community Development/Museum Board in 2012 and now General Government Services, which completes my goal.

This experience has helped me learn and understand my fellow councillors better and to interact with the senior staff members of the various county departments.

I also feel that my previous several years experience on the former Dufferin County Board of Education, where I served a term as chair, and the experience on Shelburne council, plus my extensive business experience in senior management and ownership roles will provide a solid, well-rounded offering to be considered.

The issues that, in my opinion, will be a priority are the implementation of the county Official Plan, as well as assisting with a clear direction for the deep site based on recommendations put forth by the Community Development Committee by the end of 2013.

In discussions with county councillors, there appears to be considerable support for my desire to serve as Warden. Over the next few months, I plan to talk to councillors about issues they are concerned with and work to gain their confidence and support.

Bill Hill, Mayor

Township of Melancthon
