Junior C Vets hang up the sticks – loss to Hamilton ends the season

The Shelburne Junior C Vets are done for the season after coming up short in their best of five series against the Hamilton Bengals.

The final game on Wednesday, July 24, at Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex ended with a 6-1 win for Hamilton.

The Vets knew it was going to be a tough series - the Hamilton squad finished in second place in the West Division of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League with a 10–4–2 record for the season.

Despite being the underdogs, the Vets played a solid series and battled it out right to the final buzzer to end game four.

“We won that game here last Friday night, it was a great game. We won in overtime.” said Vets coach Mark Early of the teams' successes in the playoffs. “We lost down there 5-3, it was an empty netter there. It was a really good game. We had a little penalty trouble tonight.”

Game one of the series on Tuesday, July 16, ended with a 12–3 loss for Shelburne but the team rallied in game two on July 19, when they hosted in their home arena and kept pace with the Bengals

and made a comeback in the third period with two goals to tie the game at six.

Returning for the overtime period, the Vets took the win when Charlie McCannell scored at 5:51 into the OT period and the squad shut down Hamilton for the time remaining.

Retuning to Hamilton for game three, the Vets ran into trouble and couldn't score in the second or third periods after notching three in the first frame.

“We definitely played better than last year,” Early said. “We played those guys well, we could have beat them.”

With the season over it's never too early to start looking at what's going to happen next year.

“We have a lot of returning players. We will lose five of our players this year (due to age limits). Then we have a lot of midgets who are over age and are coming up and will be available. We'll still have a solid team next year. We had tough time scoring this year. Next year the Junior C's will be playing with the bigger nets. The whole league will open up, it won't be as a defensive type league. It will be more of an offensive league. You have lot of the bigger scores like they have in Junior B. You'll see a lot more of that next year with the bigger nets, I'm sure.”

The Vets ended the regular season with a 6-9-1 record.
