Cubs down to final games, 4–1 win over Nobleton

The Mansfield Cubs won their home game over the Nobleton Cornhuskers on Wednesday evening at the ball diamond at Mansfield Park, but even with the two points the Cubs won't be making the playoffs.

Even if they win their final game, they will be three points behind the Midland Indians who are currently in the number eight spot.

Only the top eight teams make the playoffs in the North Dufferin Baseball League Senior Division.

Still, the win was a good thing for the squad who seems to have rallied late in the season.

Their 17–10 win over the first place Bolton Brewers on Saturday, July 20, was a ‘barn burner' of a game with the Cubs getting three home runs in the first two innings.

The Club had been having trouble getting on base in the mid season, but have turned it around and are really showing some good wood and base hitting.

Unfortunately the rally comes too late in the season to matter.

Their final two games are just a formality to end the season.

“Even if we won or lost these last two games it still wouldn't have been enough. We're a little short,” said Cubs coach George Linger.

Explaining the win over Bolton, Linger said “We just hit the ball really well. We had four home runs, we were getting guys on base for a change. We've got some good ball players, we had some good bats. The problem is we haven't been consistent. In that game we were. We were able to load up the bases and get guys on and when we did get the hits we scored.”

The Cubs have one more game to end the season.

Going into the playoffs the Bolton Brewers are leading the pack with 46 runs after 26 games.

They are followed by the Orillia Majors who have a 19-4–1 record for the season, and the Aurora Jays who are in third place with 37 points.
